Veterans recount fierce fighting at Chu Pong Mountain in a night of heavy sniper and mortar fire. A US platoon, part of Air Cavalry, faced multiple assaults with casualties, capturing grim scenes of execution and narcotics on the battlefield. Reinforcements struggled as the fighting intensified and the platoon held firm.
A large winter storm blankets the Northeast with 10 to 12 inch snowfalls in places and 70 mph winds delaying flights while California endures a sixth straight day of heavy rains. Mt Wilson records near four inches in six hours as the storm shifts southward, and a Wisconsin man dies after his car leaves the road into the Waterloo River amid freezing conditions.

A anonymous caller warned Sen. Edward M. Kennedy will not reach City Hall alive five days before the second anniversary of President Kennedy’s assassination. Lynn police, boosting patrols, reported no incident as Kennedy visited City Hall and nearby sites 15 miles north of Boston.

Moundsville penitentiary inmates Marvin Meadows aged 24 and John Thomas Jr aged 23 escaped from a work detail at the prison farm. Both were serving sentences from Kanawha County for robbery and breaking and entering respectively. They were listed as missed shortly after 8 a.m.
