Million Acre Big Bend Park Planned In Rio Grande Frontier
A nine member party including Col. Conrad L. Wirth explored a proposed Big Bend area on the Texas side destined for a national park. The plan covers 1,000,000 acres along the Rio Grande with canyons such as Mariscal and Santa Helena and includes the existing 286,000 acre state park at the Chisos. Congress authorized the National Park Service to accept the land in fee simple when possible, with Texas needing to secure title through purchase and legislation due to school land interests.
