A Raleigh County Jail shakedown uncovered a pen knife, razor blades, and two broken hacksaw blades on inmates. Razor and hacksaw blades were in a cell, the pen knife in a shoe toe. Inmate Franklin Ferrell, held for breaking and entering, had a hacksaw blade found in his bed.

Givens Receives Prison Sentence
Givens 19 of Cool Ridge was found guilty by a Raleigh County Criminal Court jury of second degree murder in the death of 63 year old Thomas Pace. He received a 5 to 18 year sentence from Judge Harry L. McCreery. Pace was beaten to death with a bummerjack last April near his Fireco home. Forrest Dallas Moye Ghent, charged in the killing, is held by U S Naval Authorities in Ashland Kentucky and will be brought back for a January trial in Beckley. A $10 000 suit was filed against the two by Pace’s widow Virginia Pace. Randall Ayers, who pleaded guilty to possession of a stolen vehicle, drew one to five years.

Gabriel Garcia, a 68 year old farm laborer, was honored for bravery decades after being treated as a deserter. A WWI rescue near St Juvin earned him the Distinguished Service Cross, Purple Heart, and Victory Medal with three battle clusters. He was wounded in France October 16, 1918 and later corrected after learning he had been listed as a deserter.
