The Appalachian Council honored J. Chapman of Montcoal and Austin Caperton of Slab Fork with Silver Beaver awards at a banquet attended by about 150. Caperton, absent due to illness, was praised for long service. Chapman noted for district leadership. E. Bibb, council vice president, lauded new officers and a large executive board of 58 men from the three-county area. Robert L. Two-Lane Turnpike Feasible Now Four-Lane by 1956 or 1965 Sure
Hugh Hutchinson of the West Virginia Turnpike Commission told the Appalachian Chapter of the West Virginia Society of Professional Engineers that a two-lane turnpike is feasible now with four lanes by 1956 or 1965 as revenue from the two-lane would fund the larger road. The plan would cut Beckley to Charleston distance by 14 miles and save 64 minutes at 50 mph, with tolls of 90 cents for cars and 3.55 for trucks. no public funds would be used and trucks would supply about 80 percent of revenue.
