Million Profits From Oil Stock Pool Revealed Before Senate
The Senate banking committee heard how a small group led by Arthur W. Cutten earned substantial profits in 1928 and 1929 from a giant oil stock pool without personal investment. They allegedly netted over 12 million dollars by handling nearly 2 million Consolidated Oil shares paid for from receipts, with New York Stock Exchange investigations ongoing. Raskob testified about a 1929 syndicate stock account involving Alfred E. Smith, intended to support County Trust shares after Riordan’s death to avert a bank run. Sinclair and Cutten described actions in the oil deal, including a $30 per share asking price.
