AP reports voters lined up nationwide in heavy numbers for the Nixon Kennedy contest. Early returns from New Hampshire Kansas Virginia North Carolina and Minnesota show mixed leads for both candidates with small precincts offering snapshot results including Nixon 71 Kennedy 61 in Parsons Kansas and 7 0 for Kennedy in a Virginia village.
A nationwide spot check shows high or near record turnout in many states. Pennsylvania reports heavy voting across sections while Michigan notes long early lines. Illinois, Missouri, Texas, Indiana, Georgia, and Ohio report vigorous early voting with Dem turnout in St Louis and Atlanta seeking more machines. State and congressional races noted.

President Eisenhower waited five minutes before casting his ballot at the Barlow firehouse near Gettysburg and returned to the White House by 7 50 am. Twenty four students picketed the White House demanding immediate civil rights action as diplomats from 53 nations watched the voting.
Weather outlook for West Virginia notes cloudy areas with light rain and milder temperatures, followed by colder air. A B47 Stratojet bomber crashed on take-off from Lockbourne Air Force Base in Ohio during a routine training mission. All five crew members aboard were killed. The $2 million jet exploded on impact with the 12,000 foot runway. Names were not released pending next of kin notification.
Rescue teams moved through a rugged area 40 miles south of Quito to reach a Fairchild twin turboprop airliner that crashed into the dormant Atacazo Cerro volcano in Pichincha province. The craft carried 34 passengers and three crew members, all reportedly Ecuadorians, on a flight from Guayaquil to Quito.

The race between John F. Kennedy and Richard M. Nixon centers on the Big Seven with 205 electoral votes, a path toward 269. Eisenhower swept these states in 1956, but most are doubtful now though polls show Kennedy leading in New York’s 45 votes. Pennsylvania with 32 votes remains uncertain.
At victory, a pair of 15 man Secret Service details stand by to guard the incoming president Kennedy and to support Nixon as vice president. Eisenhower will remain protected by the White House detail until Jan. 20 when he leaves office. Kennedy has had no agents assigned during the campaign.
The Air Force failed to launch a radiation study payload when the Blue Scout rocket second stage burned out early at Cape Canaveral. The mission aimed to place the device at about 24 500 miles altitude to explore detecting nuclear explosions in space.

In Fountain Hill near Bethlehem Pennsylvania Senator John F Kennedy has installed a private telephone line to his Hyannis Port home and asked Roy Reabuck Lehigh County Democratic chairman to call tonight's results. The First Ward has backed the national winner in all 15 presidential elections this century. 673 Democrats and 395 Republicans are registered.
A package mailed to Vice President Richard Nixon in Washington contained an Army M15 artillery simulator with a pull string trigger. Clerks spotted the note pull string to open, and an Army ordnance unit at Ft. Rosecrans found the device. Experts said the flashpowder could have killed nearby if detonated.
A Beckley League of Women Voters spokesman reports early today that 60 foot electioneering signs were not everywhere in place at polling sites. County clerk offices delivered two signs per voting place but some locations had only one or none. Campaign stickers and posters appeared near doorways and were removed by league workers. Poll workers and campaigners within the limit seemed unaware of state election law requirements.
At Duncan-Catron Mo jtor Co Precinct 2 about 133 had voted by 10:30 am as turnout surged. Beclley Junior High Precinct 3 logged 158 by 11 am, including 90-year-old W H Ford who joked about voting for his 18th president. Precinct 11 City Hall reported 155 votes by 11:15 am while Raleigh County Courthouse Precinct 1 saw heavy activity with no tally yet. Elkins Precinct 14 had 59 votes by 10:20 am from 294 registered, Temple Street Precinct 19 reached 119 of 526, and Sunrise Precinct 20 noted more than a quarter of voters cast by 10:35 am.
A notice states free transportation to polling places is available and invites voters to call CL 2-2700. The Democratic committee chaired by John W. Smith posts the service as paid by the committee.
