Three Crab Orchard Girls Die After Highway Crash

Thirteen year old Janet Gail King died at Beckley hospital after a crash on West Virginia Route 16 in Crab Orchard that also killed her sister Molly, 12, and cousin Mary C. Wilson, 14. The driver, 73 year old Bessie Hartsog of Sophia, faced two counts of negligent homicide. Courts released her after treatment for shock. Police reported two other Beckley area accidents causing property damage and injury, plus a break in at Underwood Lumber Co. and multiple arrests.

West Virginia Residency Rule for Bar Struck Down

A three judge federal panel ruled a one year residency requirement to practice law in West Virginia violates due process and equal protection. The decision, 2-1, followed a suit by Donald R. Smith of Charleston denied bar exam results for not meeting the residency rule.

County Turnout Shows Early Voting Patterns Across Precincts

By 11 45 am turnout varied with Whitestick 248 of about 800 registered voting, Precinct 13 South Oakwood 126, Precinct 20 Sunrise Ave reporting a strong turnout, while Harper Road and others refused totals. Courthouse and City Hall logged heavy votes. 60 foot rule violations and late openings at Piney Oaks and Mount Tabor prompted scrutiny.

State Politicians Await Results From Large Republican Turnout

With a heavy Democratic tilt, expected wins for most Democratic candidates are anticipated aside from Gus R. Douglass who won re election as Agriculture Commissioner due to no Republican challenger. Man Sentenced in Brother's Shooting Death and Other Trials

Lester Anderson, 18, was sentenced to 12 months in jail and fined 250 in Raleigh County Circuit Court after pleading guilty to involuntary manslaughter in his brother Calvin's death on July 2. The sentence was suspended and Anderson placed on 15 months probation. Also in court, John Wayne Fortner, 138, received one to 10 years for forgery with credit for time served. Other defendants included Eugene Delp on receiving stolen goods and Vernon Crenshaw on theft from Montgomery Ward.

FHA Finances West Virginia Housing Project

The Farmers Home Administration allocates 96500 for a Barbour County site project in Philippi West Virginia to develop 14 acres for low to moderate income housing. Ground was broken by Barbour County Housing Association to fund roads grading water and sewer lines. Homes will be sold near 3000 dollars to qualifying FHA buyers.

Funeral Services Set For Accident Victims

Funeral services are planned for Mary C. Wilson 15 Molly King 12 and Janet King 14 all of Crab Orchard. The three died after a car crash in Crab Orchard with services set for 11 a m Wednesday at Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel. Burial will be in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. Janet died in a Beckley hospital Monday evening after the wreck Molly died on arrival at a local hospital Thursday and Miss Wilson died Thursday night. Friends may call after 5 p m today.

Mrs Cleo Jean Rosie Simmons 48 of Roverdale Maryland died in a car crash near her home at 7 a.m. Sunday.
