Lowell Newman of Harper sustained injuries to his left hand knee and shoulder in a state fall. Norman Davis of Stamford received care for a right leg injury from a rock strike while drilling for the Turnpike near Sullivan. Susan Bailey, four, daughter of Homer Bailey of White Oak, was treated for scalp and knee injuries after falling from a car.

West Virginia gamblers paid 49701 in excise wagering taxes for September. The 10 percent tax suggests nearly half a million dollars monthly in business. West Virginia ranked fourth nationally behind Louisiana Indiana and Illinois with 237 principals filing taxes while agents avoided payment. Robb Keyser.
