King uncovers GOP plot urging write in for president
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr said he uncovered a plan to urge Negroes to write in his name for president and called it a cruel attempt to confuse voters. He blamed within the Republican ranks for the scheme and urged Negroes not to waste ballots. Handbills and radio spots promoted the idea, with a Chicago ad agency and an Atlantic City printer involved. King suspected supporters of Barry Goldwater behind the effort. some ads were halted by the agency. The campaign aimed to draft King for president, with no intent to harm him, an agency president said.
