U S Army 1st Cavalry Division reported two close quarter battles near Plei Me in the Central Highlands with 137 Communists killed and enemy units possibly regular North Vietnamese Army. Initial counts cited 99 bodies. later figures listed 80 found and 57 carried away. A separate air raid hit Soviet aimed missile sites near Hanoi and a dangerous rescue of an airman in North Vietnam occurred as U.S. planes dropped gifts and leaflets in celebration activities.
The Defense Department identified Sgt. band of Mrs Barbara Saunders Cedar Grove West Virginia as killed in action in South Vietnam.

A passenger train struck a crowded bus at a suburban grade crossing 18 miles north of Mexico City killing at least 30 people and injuring many more. Officials said some victims may not survive as the train dragged the bus 250 feet and left cars on the tracks.

Precipitation none, wind calm, sunset at 5:25 p.m. Greenbrier and Lake conditions normal and clear. A new gauge at Hinton reads 1.8 feet. Today’s extremes show 95 at Gila Bend Arizona and 10 at Oneonta New York.
Maurine Brown Neuberger of Oregon announces she will not seek re election next year. She is one of only two women in the Senate joining Margaret Chase Smith of Maine as the remaining female senator. She cites more time with her psychiatrist as a reason.
West Virginia Supreme Court compels Raleigh County water utility owner George Willis to obey Public Service Commission order to install facilities for adequate Cabello Heights water service near Beckley. Justice Frank C. Haymond states the PSC has clear legal right to enforce compliance as Willis had not carried out the order.
Dennis Stalnaker four years old of Elkins was fatally injured after darting from his mother and running behind a parked truck into the side of a state police cruiser driven by Trooper Donald F. Mease. Mease recently moved to Elkins from Charleston.
At Alameda Naval Station California the attack carrier Coral Sea returns after nine months at sea with 5000 relatives greeting sailors and airmen. Crew recall grueling schedules and tense flights while noting antiwar demonstrations. Captain Cassell criticizes demonstrators as ill-informed and ill-kempt.
Voters especially in New York City and the East lined up in cold weather as Republicans sought a comeback since 1964. The mayoral race featured Beame Lindsay Buckley with a tight national forecast and heavy New Jersey turnout aimed at governor. Virginia and other states showed moderate to heavy turnout despite rough weather.
Mineral County charges to be filed against Robert Lyle Rice 48 for murder in the death of State Trooper R Noechel. Officers went to arrest him for brandishing a shotgun near Limestone School when Rice allegedly fired hitting Noechel in the chest. Five Rice children, oldest about 16, watched as incident unfolded. Rice surrendered after officers lobbed tear gas into the home.
Vatican sources say the Ecumenical Council will be closed in a solemn ceremony with chiefs of state and foreign missions in attendance and final decrees to be promulgated at a session on December 7. Other items include Israeli election results and notable obituaries.
The body of Presentacion Salazar, 59, a Denver paper firm worker, was found in a bloody bale of paper after he apparently rode a conveyor into a baler. The bale was baled and loaded onto a truck. a driver spotted the blood-stained bale and alerted officials.
Carl David Whittaker, 21, convicted of stabbing Mrs. Geraldine Chambers 50 times, was granted a new trial after claiming insufficient advisement of rights during a confession read to County Circuit Judge E Morton Wagner. Whittaker had admitted the slaying and faced a mandatory life sentence.
President Johnson and Lady Bird voted in Texas as they cast for ten state constitutional amendments. The polling place in Pedernales Electric Cooperative demo kitchen opened at 8 a.m. CST, with Johnson driving from his ranch to participate amid his recovery from gall bladder surgery.
FRANKFURT United Press International reports autopsy found alcohol in the body of Pfe John David Rogers 18 adopted son of Roy Rogers. The Army says death was due to asphyxiation from vomiting after a drinking incident. He was admitted to a U.S. Army hospital nine hours earlier and flown to New York for burial in California.
