Harvey Glenn McLeod bought a .22 Marlin carbine and ammo after a bank visit and filled a federal form. He shot 14 times at the North Hills center, killing three, wounding eight, then killed himself. A clerk noted his quiet, familiar demeanor despite a police record since age 10.
McLeod, a 6 foot 5 inch man with a police record, bought a Marlin 22 and fired at moving targets in a Raleigh shopping center, firing 14 shots in two minutes before police intervened. A school official had previously refused tests for a family member citing brain concerns. The incident followed a morning purchase at a hardware store for $54 and three ammo boxes.
Miller says he and rivals will appeal to coal miners asking questions and pledging honesty. He claims the Boyle era 1969 UMW election was stolen and asserts irregularities in court confirmed a win. He predicts the Labor Department and rank and file miners will monitor the vote.
President Thieu flew into Kontum as Communist shells fell within a half mile. He praised the 23rd Division for breaking the attack while U.S. adviser John Paul Vann said the situation should not look better. Thieu had earlier moved from Pleiku as North Vietnamese forces massed near the city.
On a southern thrust toward Kontum, officials report artillery near the airfield and a mopping up phase to clear the city of Communist commandos. Government spokesmen claim over 1,000 North Vietnamese killed around Kontum in five days as US and allied forces report losses and air strikes over North Vietnam.
A Raleigh County Circuit Court jury in a suit by Glen and Bragg against John Davis Jr. and Emory Massey toured the accident site on Sullivan Road. The Braggs allege Massey’s wrecker caused their Dec 14 1969 TravelAll crash while Bragg family members were helping a stranded vehicle. Witnesses will contrast Bragg’s actions and timing with the wrecker’s approach. Sayre says one occupant will testify Bragg approached before the wrecker arrived. Medical expenses claimed by Mrs Bragg total 1615.69. fault is argued to be contributory and not negligent under West Virginia law.

The Moscow talks produced calm over mutual relations and peaceful co existence but left Vietnam and Middle East wars untouched. Nixon flew to Kiev and attended a banquet a wreath laying at the Ukrainian Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and toured St Sophia Cathedral.
Younger argued the state court violated the federal constitution by intruding on elected officials power and denying California residents a republican form of government. The Supreme Court twice refused to delay the California ruling while Younger sought review before inmates on death row were resentenced. The case involved Robert Page Anderson, convicted of murder and robbery, supported by the NAACP Legal Defense Fund and the ACLU.

Beatrice Winston, 38, formerly of East Gulf, collapsed and died on a Columbus street Monday. She was the daughter of Mrs. Christabell Winston of Brooklyn and the late Terry Winston. Surviving brothers Nathaniel, Wiley, and Terry Winston Jr., reside in Brooklyn. Funeral arrangements are incomplete.
A L Honaker 89 of 817 South Kanawha Street died at his home at 1 30 a m of an apparent heart attack. Born September 28 1882 in Monroe County he was a retired Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad engineer and a Shriner. Survived by widow Elizabeth Virginia and sister Grace Barton. Funeral arrangements pending at Rose and Quesenberry.
Robert Leon Heath 57 of Newark New Jersey died on arrival at a Newark hospital after a long illness. Born March 25 1915 at Slab Fork he was the son of the late Robert Heath and Elizabeth Snead Heath. Surviving are three sisters Mrs Grace Green Mrs Constance Harris and Mrs Geraldine Kinsely and four brothers Herman Wayne Kenneth and Warren Heath.

In Belfast gunmen killed a man and wounded a British soldier while the Marxist IRA wing declares a cease-fire that the Provisional wing rejects. Sniper attacks roared on Millfields Road as both sides claim certainty about peace amid conflicting signals.
Wallace plans a saturation radio and television campaign in California to win write-in votes after his shooting. A 40 minute aides meeting approved a half hour film of rallies opposing busing and the federal bureaucracy to run on eight stations. Campaign director Charles Snider warned the effort requires strong voter indoctrination of how to write his name. Wallace not on ballot in June 6 California primary for 271 delegates.
The Beckley City Ordinance Committee recommends amending the open burning law to let Council set by resolution the hours and days for burning. The change aims to ease trash disposal hardships when hauling away waste is limited, with two readings required before becoming effective.
Spending continues to be debated as congressmen mostly reject tax hikes yet acknowledge the deficit is intolerable. Privately many lawmakers admit the only viable solution is a tax increase, despite public reluctance to raise taxes.
Mrs. Mary Ann McNulty of Beckley has been hired as secretary in Raleigh County Circuit Clerk C Harold Hanks office. She fills the post left vacant since Patricia Farley resigned in April. McNulty is a 1962 Beckley College graduate with an advanced secretarial certificate and a 1957 Woodrow Wilson High School graduate. She and her four children live with her parents, and her late husband Leonard McNulty, a former Beckley police officer, was cared for by his mother.
J. E. Williams Jr. sues Collier Guvetis in Raleigh County Circuit Court for $450 to cover damage to an automobile after Guvetis allegedly struck Williams vehicle at West Neville Street and Valley Drive South on Oct. 23, 1971.
