Survey Promised On Road Project Oak Hill

State Road Commissioner E J Worthington told Oak Hill Chamber of Commerce leaders that a summer survey will assess building a cross county highway from Stonecliff over Beary Mountain. The proposed road could be built next year, aiding Quinnimont and Sewell Mountain Districts access to Fayetteville and the county seat.

Graff Sleeps At Wheel Wreck Near Oak Hill

Oak Hill youth Ed Graff 21 was treated for chest bruises and a knee cut after his car left the road while returning home from work as a Chesapeake and Ohio Railway night employee at Thurmond. The wreck tore a fence and struck a tree near Lundale Farm close to Oak Hill Baptist Church.

Sportsman Talks To Lions Club Drive For New Band Uniforms

Oak Hill High School band director Paul G. Mackey outlines plans for a fundraising campaign to buy 70 uniforms, needing about 2500 dollars. The effort aims to restore the band to its pre war status as one of the state’s best dressed groups. The drive will be discussed with school and city officials on June 9.

Three Couples Granted Marriage Permits in Fayetteville

In Fayetteville, three couples obtained marriage permits from the county clerk. William A. Cox, 65, of Newark Ohio, and Mae Skaggs, 53, of Montgomery. James C. Lyons, 29, and Shirley Lilly, 22, both of Dothan. Stewart Tincher, 42, of Sanger, and Vada Stele, 40, of Oak Hin.

Oak Hill Business Club Plans Laurel Wreath Banquet

Oak Hill Business and Professional Women's Club completed plans for the Laurel Wreath Banquet to be held at the Hotel Hill on June 1. The event begins at 8 p.m. followed by a dance at Edgewater Steak House near Gauley Bridge. Invitations are being mailed to 12 local women to become members. Mrs Alva Mann, hostess, reported on the Charleston convention.

Jaycees Back Oak Hill for War Memorial Site

The Montgomery Junior Chamber of Commerce passes a resolution favoring Oak Hill for the Fayette County War Memorial Building. Rufus C. Hurt says a meeting with the county court and war memorial committee will study the Oak Hill site, with Guy Douglas and Charles Mahan invited for a May 26 gathering at 1 p.m. The Fayetteville site had been the court's prior choice.

Two Held Pending Probe Of Death In West Virginia

Mullens police hold two Black residents after State Police escort three to Charleston for lie detector tests. The case concerns the death of 44 year old Lawrence Burgess, a Black Eagle Mine motorman found dead early Sunday. Creed Major, a 72 year old Black miner tied to the taxi ride, was released upon return from Charleston.

Rent Control Post Closed In Wyo

The Wyoming County rent control office at Mullens has been closed to the public since May 21. Richard Bailey, Bluefield area rent director, says the office will be placed on a circuits rider with a rent control representative holding clinics one day a week. Until visit dates are announced, Bailey advises people to write to the area office at Bluefield.

X Ray Clinic Set For Tuesday In Fayetteville

Fayetteville hosts the monthly X ray clinic sponsored by the Fayette County Tuberculosis Association and Health Department from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The service is for those referred by local doctors, suspects from prior clinics, ex-sanitarium patients and families, contacts of tuberculosis cases, and individuals showing disease symptoms.

Mullens reports the annual TB X-ray clinic will be at Pineville High School from 9 a.m. to 4 30 p.m. on June 5. X-rays and examinations are free. Individuals needing X-rays who have not been notified by the Health Department are urged to attend.
