DURANGO COLO Friday a recovery team searching the wreckage of a Convair twin engine transport found four bodies instead of three. The plane went down on February 25 in the San Juan Mountains near Babcock Peak at about 12 000 feet. The four believed crew members were Capt Richard F Bellamy pilot from Memphis Tenn Maj James E Lunsford co pilot from Elkhart Ind and Sgt Edward L Fairey also from unknown origin. The fourth body remained in the nose section and weather and terrain hamper further recovery efforts.
Cloudy conditions with possible scattered thunderstorms moving into the west and south later today or tonight. Temperatures expected in the 70s in the east and low 80s in the west, with overnight lows 56 to 64. Wednesday remains cloudy and warmer with additional thunder showers. Washington dispatch reports public works bills seek about 88.5 million in matching funds for highway and state parks projects in West Virginia. Gov. Barron and Sen. Randolph discussed high 90-10 or 75-25 match shares with the federal government paying the larger portion.
Franklin Texas United Press International reports a team of medical experts began an autopsy on Henry H. Marshall 52 whose body was exhumed from a sealed vault after a grand jury opened an inquiry into his death. The exhumation aims to determine if Marshall shot himself or was killed and may reveal secrets tied to Billie Sol Estes.
Washington reports a House government operations subcommittee met behind closed doors to map its probe of Billie Sol Estes and the grain storage program. Chairman Fountain indicated hearings may proceed, while McClellan’s Senate panel continues its own closed session with Karl Mundt noting new information but many familiar details.
A U S Navy recon aircraft carrying 26 persons crashed six miles east of Munich. Air Force said 20 bodies recovered and no survivors indicated. The WW2 Constellation carried five Navy officers, 17 Navy enlisted, and four Army enlisted. It was on a navigational training mission from Rota Spain to Rhine Main. Radar equipment bulge concealed names. plane called a Warning Star.
Raleigh County Court and Raleigh County Park Board will seek bids for Stephen's Lake Dam after a May 31 joint meeting. Bids to be opened June 15, with contracts advertised after the 2:30 p.m. session, bringing the recreational project closer to completion following three years of work. The court also accepted Constable Charles Howell's resignation, appointing Charles E. Reedy to serve until November, and approved Co. C. Drewry, Beckley, as notary public.
Dutch troops in West New Guinea mounted a twin assault around Fak Fak on the Onin peninsula, shattering Indonesian paratroopers. Rear Adm. Leendert Reeser said more than 400 paratroopers were involved and that a radio transmitter, rations, and mortar shells were captured. The Indonesian defense council claimed Terminabuan fell after two days of fierce fighting, while evacuations of women and children from six towns continued as military actions intensified.
At Fort Hood Texas a M48 tank plunged 30 feet into a creek, rolled onto its top, and burst into flames, killing five soldiers including 2nd Lt David C Thayer and Sgt Roger D Swanson. An Army board investigates the cause while fire crews cool the wreck for retrieval of the bodies.
Baltimore UPI report says the Baltimore office of the Army Corps of Engineers favors immediate construction of a Bloomington Maryland reservoir on the Potomac as the first of 16 planned by 2010 to meet water and flood control needs. The plan ranks nine projects as now needed with hearings set in Petersburg and Martinsburg and mentions further reservoirs in Virginia Maryland and Pennsylvania.
President Sukarno and Supreme War Administrator Subandrio ordered United Press International to suspend operations in Indonesia for an indefinite period. Jakarta manager R E Stannard Jr said an official notice would arrive within a week. The move cites general security concerns and efforts to influence Indonesian minds regarding West Irian liberation.
Washington reports the Agriculture Department will withdraw about 42 million bushels of government owned grain from storage elevators once controlled by Texas financier Billie Sol Estes. The department cites the action as in the interest of public policy.
A Midway man, Frank Leonard Cole, 42, was killed at the Slab Fork Coal Co. mine when a coal shot crushed his chest and face around 9 30 p m Monday. The blast reportedly covered him with coal while he performed duties as section foreman. An obituary appears on page 2.
In Pineville a distraught mother described to Sheriff Leland Phillips how her husband Timmy Atwell 2 died after being beaten by his father Howard Atwell 28 intoxicated on moonshine He allegedly beat Timmy Demark Atwell 13 months old when the boy refused to walk down a mountain The mother later said she tried to protect the child while also nursing a pregnant belly The 13 month old daughter Catherine Ann was then observed at Welch Hospital with a high fever The father was arrested near home and arraigned on murder charges He claimed the beating was caused by intoxication and alcohol was purchased from Stacy Lester who faced liquor license charges and a 30 day jail term The case awaits August Grand Jury action
The American Medical Association condemned President Kennedy’s hospital plan for the aged as a step toward nationalized medicine. AMA speakers on NBC charged the King Anderson bill would raise payroll taxes up to 17 percent and waste funds on those not needing coverage. Abraham Ribicoff countered that the 17 percent figure was misleading and called AMA a staging to mislead the public.
CAPE CANAVERAL API Improving weather boosts odds of NASA launch for astronaut Scott Carpenter within 48 hours. Despite two storm systems and Florida Everglades fires causing haze, NASA spokesman Paul Haney says preparations proceed on schedule for a launch between 7 and 12:30 p.m. EST Thursday.
Gov. Barbour named two Beckley men as committee chairmen for the West Virginia Centennial Commission. H Arthur Hall, manager of the Beckley Winn Hotel, will head the Tourist and Recreation Committee, while Kermit A. Locke, attorney and Lions Club member, leads the Civic Fraternal Committee.

United States allies New Zealand and Australia ready to join in sending troops to Thailand to bolster Southeast Asia defense against communism. Canberra reports point to Australia preferring a fighter squadron but prepared to deploy ground forces if needed, with a formal announcement expected Wednesday. New Zealand expected to provide airmen and cargo planes by weekend, possibly followed by army commandos. Thai Foreign Minister Khoman said SEATO members would join U S units in Thailand, though names were not specified.
