Raleigh Register reports 10 year old Charlotte Merritt of Whipple disappeared barefooted after supper and was sought by family friends and state police through the night. She was found at the Treadway home where her aunt had kept her. The child was reprimanded by her grandmother.
Oak Hill plans a bond selling contest between the Rotary and Lions Clubs with committees led by Hr. J. McKinnon. A $25 contribution was given to the American Cancer Society as the Oak Hill campaign is now backed by the Business and Professional Woman's Club. Lions signs mark East Main Street West Main Street and Route 6 entrances.
Mount Hope Lions Club plans a $2500 scout hall on a 20 by 40 foot lot adjoining Mount Hope Stadium. The project gains backing from the Mount Hope City Council with scout master Bill Harnsbarger thanking the club for support. Officers are nominated for June election. Den Mother Mrs. Virgil Dillon named. band and chorus activities noted for Mount Hope and surrounding high schools.
Mount Hope Elementary plans a spring pageant titled Woodland Fantasy featuring 500 students. The show, directed by Mrs. H. B. Maroney with an assistant lineup of elementary teachers, is set for 8 p.m. Saturday in the high school auditorium.
Fayette County couples were issued marriage licenses by County Clerk Lacy Weely. Recipients include Robert Lee Allman of Smithers with Geraldine Hudson of Cannelton, Walter Bryant of Marling with Betty Jo Lambert of Montgomery, Walter Champion of Mount Hope with Henrietta Ware of Lochgelly, Tony DeMark of Boomer with Emaline Wead of Kimberly, Thomas Morris of Edmond with Ernestine Priddy of Lookout, Harold Owens of Minsden with Anna Tenise Thorne of Oak Hill, and Ronald Underwood with Margery Ellis, both of Fayetteville.
Du Bois High School seniors will graduate Monday night at 8 p.m. with Dr. J. J. K. Wells, WV Negro schools supervisor, as speaker. Sunday 3 p.m. baccalaureate will be at First Baptist Church by Rev. Russell A. Ferry. Principal T. W. Chiles will present class A diplomas, E. C. Smith will hand diplomas, and W. H. Nelson will present awards.
Charleston reports show Okey Patteson spent 3259.06 after April 22 with 2063 in contributions, total expenditures 4019.06 for his gubernatorial bid. R D Bailey spent 4050 with 3950 contributions in the same period, while Ward Wylie spent 31 with no contributions for the Ninth District Senate renomination. J Alfred Taylor Jr spent 144.15 for the Lith District Senate bid with no contributions recorded.
Norman C. Mitchem, Basin native and son of Mr and Mrs Charlie Mitchem, graduated from the Fort Meade food service school after a two month cook course. Now at Bolling Field Washington D C, he served in the Pacific and European theatres in World War II and earned the Purple Heart with oak leaf cluster the Bronze Battle Star clusters and multiple ribbons including the American Theatre and World War II Victory ribbons.
Oak Hill residents with plots in Odd Fellows Cemetery are urged to clean their property before Memorial Day. Oak Hill Garden Club and Odd Fellows Lodge coordinate the effort, after planting forsythia and lilac at the entrance. Mrs. H. F. Zeek leads, with Miss Willis Huddleston, to obtain perpetual care for the cemetery.
Laurel Rebekah Lodge sent a donation to the American Cancer Society. At last night’s meeting Mrs Nannie Smiths reported on hospital visits and members were urged to bring fruits candy and other food for Fayette County infirmary. Mrs Ellen Nichols urged attendance on June 27 to finish plans for a weiner roast.
Oceana candidates must file with the city recorder by May 25 for the June 1 election. Polls open 6:30 a.m. to 6:20 p.m. A recorder and five councilors will be elected from qualified voters. Elected candidates take office July 11 for a two year term.
Bernard Rocke will assume mayoral duties in Mount Hope on June 1. An official canvass of the recent election confirmed results with present officials Pat Garrett and councilmen noting vote tallies. Citizens party nominees include R. H. Carter and S. D. Orwin, with Bernard Rocke as mayor and Beryl Vickers as city clerk. Frank Privitt and others join the council.
Plans for the East End of Oak Hill school building were turned over to the Fayelte County Board of Education by the architect. State board approval will enable local action. Charleston architects aim to submit Montgomery band room Boomer Falls View and Simmons school plans plus a four room Fayetteville elementary addition within two to three weeks.
Dr. Morris Fishbein, secretary of the American Medical Association, will speak at West Virginia Tech auditorium in Montgomery on Wednesday at p.m. The Fayette County Medical Society sponsors the event, and the public is invited.
Jane Miles on a week long Oceana vacation with her parents Mr and Mrs Bill Miles was honored on Wednesday with a wiener roast. She is a Marmet Hospital patient. Guests included Billie Beane Sandra Miles Sally Conley Sally Miller Judy Blankenship Garnet Chambers Nicky Patrick Roger Toler Larry Blankenship Bobby Goodwin Mrs Miles and the honoree's grandparents Mr and Mrs BUL Miles.
Pritchett withdraws from Mullens city commissioner race leaving both party tickets with the same candidate, Al Perry, on the Citizens ticket. Election officials are named to preside over three precincts including South Mullens Freeinety, Ben Dunman, and Mullens High School precincts with appointed receiving and counting clerks and commissioners.
OAK HILL Fayette County District Boy Scouts and leaders plan the annual camporee at Beckwith at the County 4 H camp tomorrow and Sunday. The Saturday night camp fire from 7 30 to 9 30 is open to the public. Religious services will be held in camp for Protestant boys led by Rev. Mark Farren and Catholic boys will attend Mass at St Peter s and Paul s Catholic Church in Scarbro. C F Ward district Scout Commissioner will direct the event promising one of the district s best camporees.
Mt Hope High School class of 1948 held a party at The Wooden Dot with 64 seniors in attendance. Public notices recount claims against the estate of Severino C Capellari, with creditors and beneficiaries urged to file vouchers and appear to protect interests by November 19, 1848.
Mullens Community Forum plans a 7:30 p.m. Tuesday meeting at Ben Dunmats school to draft summer playground plans. The group, led by president C. Stewart, notes funds are limited this year and school grounds may be used if the high school gym annex is built on former playground land near South Mullens on Virginian Railway Co. property.
Doris Shrewsbury of Herndon, a beer hall employee, is free on 500 bond awaiting grand jury action on a felonious assault charge. Her employer, Phillip Lusk, was exonerated on the same charge. Ford, 26, of Meriden, alleges Shrewsbury struck him with a blackjack while Lusk held him. Ford showed head marks. Shrewsbury admits using the blackjack to maintain order amid a disturbance with Kathleen Ward of Caloric present.
Glenn Cozort, a Virginian Railway employee visiting his parents in Oceana, collided with a young buck near Pineville. The deer was killed by game protector W M Rutherford after the incident. Cozort estimated his speed at 35 miles per hour and continued to Mullens with his frightened mother.
In a hearing, Ford was convicted of assaulting the Ward girl after being charged with intent to assault and attacking the girl in his place of business. He was fined $10 and costs. the magistrate found insufficient evidence for the intent charge. Lusk’s charge for holding Ford was dismissed as the Ward girl denied being slapped. Witnesses noted the girl’s nose bled at the establishment.
