MOSCOW UPI Tass reports Alexander Nesmeyanov, head of the program that sent Yuri Gagarin into space, has resigned as president of the Soviet Academy of Sciences. His move follows a day after the Defense Ministry announced four generals and a colonel killed in an aircraft accident. Tass noted no link between the events, recalling a 1960 tragedy. The 62 year old chemist had overseen about 200 facilities and asked to be relieved of duties.
Norfolk and Western and Chesapeake and Ohio railways ask the Interstate Commerce Commission for permission to acquire Island Creek Fuel and Transportation Co a coal hauling barge line on the Ohio River. Each railroad would pay 4 million for the barge line assets with Norfolk Chesapeake Transportation Co to operate. The move would serve coal fields in Virginia West Virginia and Kentucky with the barge line assets run by the joint venture from the railroads.
