Kennedy vows U S stance on Europe despite unease
President Kennedy told a Washington banquet that the United States would keep a strong voice on European policy despite criticism from France and West Germany. He said decisions would not be based on the capitals’ short-term popularity, and noted dissent need not mean disunity. He praised De Gaulle’s loyalty to the West while acknowledging differences with Adenauer and De Gaulle on Atlantic roles and Berlin talks. He warned that if a moment of truth comes, the United States would bear the burden of defending Berlin.
