Falconer's Voyage by Hugh Hickling reviewer portrait
A wartime novel opens with Falconer, a strict flotilla commander, amid English officers and weary sailors. Hickling contrasts his icy discipline with human cost as the Calais dunes become a rehearsal for real invasion. The crew falters yet aims for a noble end, turning hardship into a sobering hero’s arc.
