Six year old Suzanne Smith of Beckley Child Care Center is hospitalized in good condition after being struck by a car at 7 45 am in front of the center. The first grader suffered a fractured left leg cuts to her chin and the loss of three teeth when hit by a car driven by Sturgeon Crawford Wilkerson 50 Route 1 Beckley as she darted across the highway to board a school bus. The incident is under investigation with no charges filed yet.

Weather Balloon Found On Mountain Near Rhodell
A radiosonde from the U S Weather Bureau sent aloft May 9 was found on a Rhodell mountainside. Mrs D Antoni spotted a large red parachute and summoned Sylvanus Kelly to retrieve it. The device had ascended to about 17 miles before returning to earth and was mailed to Joliet for reconditioning.

Balloon From Institute School Found Between Indiana and Ebensburg
Three Beckley boys launched a helium balloon from Institute School as a space project. The balloon traveled at least 240 air miles and was later found by Reverend W. B. Keifer between Indiana and Ebensburg, Pa, who sent a letter requesting Joseph write him. The youths are Larry Hawley 10 and Jim 10 and Joseph 14 Bernett, all from Beckley.
