Coal Insurance Rates Hearing Delayed in West Virginia
In Charleston the fire insurance rate plan would cut premiums by 18.4 percent for well protected homes while unprotected dwellings rise 9.9 percent. Insurance Commissioner Gillooly recessed the hearing after a two hour session as the West Virginia Coal Assn asked for a 60 day continuance. He expects to set a new date soon and said overall rates would save about 1.5 million dollars over five years for policy holders, though mining firms would see about 1.18 million more in adjusted premium receipts. Rates on mine property vary: frame buildings up 25 percent, fire resistant mine buildings down 25 percent, with an overall coal industry impact up about 13 percent. The new schedule was filed by the state Inspection Bureau. Gillooly halted cancellations and rewrites for frame mine-property dwellings pending rate approval.
