Cars Prep For 500 Qualifier
About a million dollars of specially built race cars were on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway grounds today with 46 of 57 entries in place for the 500 mile race May 30. Weekend arrivals included two likely contenders for track record and pole position in the first elimination session. The Novi Special delivered for Troy Ruttman of Houston, youngest Indy winner at 22 in 1952, is the only front drive car. Bill Vukovich, winner of the last two 500s, tested the Lindsey Hopkins Special new to him. The Dean Van Lines car driven by Jimmy Bryan arrived. it is a Kuzma with an Offenhauser engine. High winds kept Bryan and Ruttman from track time Sunday. Jack McGrath and Sam Hanks, both close to 140 mph in practice, race Kurtis-Krafts built for the 2½ mile course. Veterans Paul Russo and Tony Bettenhausen turned 137 mph despite wind.
