Mount Hope Engineer Visits India On Coal Loading Study
Thomas W. Howard, president of Thomas W. Howard Inc., returned from a month in India where he joined 11 other engineers and economists examining foreign transportation systems. The study, by Coverdale & Colpitts, aims to speed coal handling at mines and loading points to cut delays. Howard toured 50 coal mines across Jharia, Raniganj, Karampura, Peach Valley, Korea, and Talcher, noting persistent reliance on manual labor for moving coal from mine dumps to waiting railcars. He advocates automation to reduce delays and observed Indians often carry coal in baskets on their heads. In Calcutta at the Grand Hotel, Howard described hot climates and advised boiled water and thoroughly cooked food. He noted temperatures rising to 130 to 140 degrees before the July monsoon. Howard holds mining engineering degrees from West Virginia University and previously taught at WVU and led New River Company as chief engineer.
