Charles L. Hurst former city editor of The Raleigh Register is in critical condition at a Greenville hospital. A Parkersburg native he joined the Raleigh staff in 1991, served two hitches ending in 1955, moved to Wilmington as reporter then city editor and managing editor of Star Newspapers, and most recently worked with a Greenville newspaper.

Thomas 65 Dies. RVn Truck Driver Veteran Of WWI
Hampton Clifford Thomas 65 died at 10 10 am at his daughter's residence in Sophia from a cerebral hemorrhage. A retired truck driver for General Department Stores in Stotesbury after 38 years, he was a World War I veteran born in Floyd County Virginia on December 6, 1893. Surviving are four brothers, four sisters, another daughter, five grandchildren, and his parents Mr. and Mrs. Clayburn Thomas. The body rests at Williams and Craven Funeral Home with arrangements incomplete.

Beckley May 17 Clean-Up Week was a success says Fire Chief Otis Lyons. The week-long campaign by Beckley Optimist Club with the Fire Department Beckley Beautiful Committee and Pure Oil Company supervised burning about 50 piles of trash on six occasions. Free flower seeds and litterbug bags were handed out to residents as co-chairmen Claude England and Bob Miller thanked volunteers.

The Southeastern West Virginia development conference committee adopted the name Big Eight Develop ment Association at Beckley on January 30. Eight counties Fayette Greenbrier Nicholas Mercer Monroe Raleigh Summers and Wyoming will form a non profit body with a draft by law circulated for review. A sub committee was authorized to complete incorporation and pass future corporate charter steps. Each community should create its own local development body to attract industry and tourism.
