Kennedy Signs Minimum Wage Bill After Historic Vote
President Kennedy used twenty pens to sign the measure and distribute them to union leaders and lawmakers. He asserted no worker in interstate commerce should earn less than 1.25 dollars an hour, a claim echoed by Labor Secretary Gold berg who called the fight the hardest yet. The law raises the wage floor for 23.9 million workers to 1.15 dollars on September 5 and to 1.25 dollars two years later, and extends coverage to 3.6 million new workers in chains stores with starter wages of 1.00 dollar, then rising to 1.25.
