Jobless Tax Case In Federal Court

The Rathbell Coal Company of Preston County asks the Supreme Court to decide if it is liable for unemployment compensation taxes during a United Mine Workers strike. The state seeks $3,680.55 additional for last quarter 1847 while the firm requests a refund of $2,584.90 for the first three quarters. The company argues it bears no responsibility for idle time from April 8 1846 to May 13 1846 and that unemployment benefits paid to its independent union workers should be covered by the state fund, not raise the company tax. Workers received $15,048.47 in benefits.
