Area Officials Cite Need For Outright Grants
Beckley and Raleigh County officials prefer outright grants over federal loans under the low in spirits areas bill. The city eyes up to 75 million in grants for public facilities and 76 million for training and subsistence payments, while the county vows to study county level aid. The bill offers 200 million in loans split between urban and rural areas and a 100 million lending fund for public works. Mayor Cecil L. Miller notes four projects may require forms and allocations, but without outright grants the city faces difficulties. The city must avoid creating debt beyond future administrations and loan percentages for sewer extensions remain uncertain.
