Huntington man faces three murder charges

Jesse Williard White was captured in his Huntington home after a tense standoff with police. He faces three counts of murder and one of felonious wounding regarding the deaths of Paul and Betty Damron and other victims tied to Loretta Jarrell. Children were held as hostages during the incident.

Dynamite Car Fire on West Virginia Turnpike

A car carrying a case and a half of dynamite caught fire near the Glass House restaurant on the West Virginia turnpike. Firefighters cooled the burning trunk with water and prevented detonation after a fragment of primer cord rubbed against wiring.

Burdette Signs Agreement Releasing Patrolman From Suit

Kilsyth man Clark Burdette signed a statement releasing Patrolman Pat Lilly from civil suit in exchange for jail release after pleading guilty to indecent exposure. The document does not deny the assault occurred. Lilly has not been released from possible suit.

Two Condemnation Cases Settled in Raleigh County

Settlements in two condemnation cases over property for the Appalachian Highway Project were approved by a Raleigh County Circuit Court jury. State Highway Department officials noted other condemnations remain. two more trials are set for this term. Actress Gia Scala Found Dead In Hollywood Hills

British born actress Gia Scala aged 36 was found dead in her Hollywood Hills home late Sunday. Detectives say the preliminary cause is an apparent accidental drug overdose with multiple medication bottles found in her bedroom. $60 000 Sought In Accident Suit

Mr and Mrs Clay S Crouse of White Oak sue Eden Williams and Owen Williams of White Oak in Raleigh County Cir Court over a May 16 1970 collision on West Virginia Route 3 near Skyland Farms. They seek 10 000 for Mr Crouse and 20 000 for Mrs Crouse plus 30 000 exemplary damages totaling 60 000. Owen Williams 80 plus is alleged unfit to drive.

Quang Tri under siege as North Vietnamese close in

In South Vietnam the Quang Tri defense collapsed as North Vietnamese forces overran La Vang and pressed on toward the city. Elite South Vietnamese Marines failed to break through to Quang Tri while U S helicopters attempted evacuations but were driven off by heavy fire. UPI reported officers warning thousands of ARVNs in the city face likely death or capture with escape unlikely. A $200000 civil action filed in Raleigh County Circuit Court names Dr. Stephen T. J. Lee of Beckley and Appalachian Regional Hospitals Inc. as defendants. Emory Isaac Tabor alleges Lee caused gas and blood to enter the pleural cavities during an attempted injection on November 5, 1970 after frost bite treatment. Tabor seeks damages for permanent injuries and pain and suffering and demands a jury trial.
