Charleston AP reports that Dr. Margaret T. Ross announced she will reconsider her position as mental health director amid unconfirmed word Dr. Richard J. Lilly may leave his department posts. She cited soul searching and may resign later. Lilly’s residency qualification for the director post remains a flashpoint in the ongoing administration dispute.

Impetuous Wins 5 6 Division In County Spelling Bee

Cathryn Kitty Lovell of Sophia Elementary won the 5 6 division of the Tri County Spelling Bee last night, defeating Town District runner up Joan Smith as they vie for county honors next week in Beckley. The event drew a crowd of family and school staff as 12 spellers competed with mentors and judges guiding the contest.

Charleston AP reports State Tax Commissioner John A. Field Jr. is likely to be named the next federal judge for the Southern District of West Virginia. Eisenhower is expected to nominate Field for Senate confirmation next week. Field has clearance from WV senators and would replace Judge Ben Moore who died last year.

Beckley Guardsmen to March in Washington Parade

Beckleyites join West Virginia color guard in a 2 pm Sunday Washington parade before the National Guard Memorial Building dedication. The 150th Armored Cavalry unit will parade with 1309 National Guard flags, honoring citizen soldiers and past and present National Guard units. Captain John W. Moon will command WV color guard. Beckley troops include Master Sgt. Robert Cerrito and several sergeants and specialists.

Mrs Luce Quits Envoy's Post

Washington AP Clare Boothe Luce resigns as ambassador to Brazil after a public clash with Senator Wayne Morse. President Eisenhower announced the decision after an hour of White House talks. Beckley church members join 250 million worldwide for the Orthodox Easter festival. Holy Week services run through Easter with rites led by Father John Newcombe. Senate Bill Aims to Grow Forestry Jobs Nationwide

The Senate passed by amendment a bill backed by West Virginia Democrats to fund three million dollars for nationwide national forest hiring. The program targets unemployment areas with workers for timber stand improvement reforestation fire protection recreation and watershed projects plus construction of trails and bridges. Byrd and Randolph call it a sensible approach and the measure was folded into the 1959 second supplemental appropriation bill.

Fair tonight with lows in the 40s east to lower 50s west. Saturday expects partly cloudy skies and warmer temperatures with scattered thundershowers later. School Board Holds Marathon Session Night Meeting Chairs Sale Ban Tabbed

Raleigh County Board of Education kept a long meeting from 7:30 p.m. to 1 a.m. Wednesday. A motion to ban selling pop candy and popcorn on school premises was tabled for May 26. Superintendent Sherman Trail noted little debate for or against school sales.

Ballard Retires. Altare Heads State Police Unit

State Police Lt. M. H. Altare today assumed temporary command of Co. D., Beckley, after Capt. S. C. Ballard retired after 30 years. Ballard becomes assistant to the state fire marshal, operating from Charleston while home is in Beckley. Two captaincies vacant as Supt. Hazen H. Fair moved Capt. W. W. Murphy from Co. C., Elkins, with Murphy retired effective May 25 and now on leave.

Optimist Club Promotes City Clean-Up Campaign

Beckley Optimist Club members on a fire truck with brooms mops and buckets will tour the city Saturday afternoon promoting Community Clean-Up Week. The campaign runs all week to rid the city of trash and debris. President John Jackson urges members to attend City Hall at noon Saturday for the activity.

Oak Hill Woman Wins Best of Show at Beckley Exhibit

Oak Hill artist Mrs. Herbert Tolley won Best of Show for The Benediction at Beckley Art Group's 13th annual Spring Exhibit. Her autumn scene used orange and blue, painted with a painting knife. The winning piece was viewed with 153 other entries today at the Beckley Elks Club Ballroom.
