April 1 Deadline On Scholarship for WVU
Raleigh County seniors are reminded of the April 1 deadline to file for the 1954 Board of Governors Achievement Scholarship at West Virginia University. Dr. F J Holter, chairman of the university committee, notes forms are available through high school principals. Twenty five winners receive four years of university fee remission, with ten alternates named. selections consider scholarship, activities, citizenship and all around qualifications.

Curtis Arrested In Morals Case
Lawrence Curtis 46 waived to the Raleigh County grand jury on a morals charge. He is jailed in Raleigh County. A 14 year old niece says she lived with Curtis and his wife and that the uncle had improper relations since she was 10. her parents are dead.

Assistant Postmaster III Aidon E. Borrer is reported in fairly good condition today at Beckley Hospital undergoing treatment for a chest condition after being admitted Saturday. His wife, who had outpatient treatment on game day, is recuperating at the Harper Road home.

J. B. Heller of 113 Church St remains on the critical list at Beckley Hospital after a heart attack near the Beckley Elks Club. His daughter reports total paralysis and unconsciousness since Wednesday night. a son, Charles, is with him. Heller has led the Beckley Lewis Furniture Co store for about 35 years.

Cool Ridge Child In Isolation Ward
Martin Meadows, four, son of Mr and Mrs William Meadows, is Raleigh County’s first polio suspect this year. Diagnosed as possible infantile paralysis he was confined to the isolation ward at Marmet Hospital for seven days after being removed Monday. Parents, who accompanied him, reported the child rested well at about 7 p m. His brothers aged six and eight have received gamma globulin inoculations. The father, a truck driver, is currently unemployed and had been working on the West Virginia Turnpike and for a strip mining firm.

Formosan mine official seeks safety gains from West Virginia study
Chim-Ran Lou, Formosan chief of mine safety, completed a two week tour of Raleigh County and southern West Virginia mines. He noted Formosa’s fatality rate at about ten times the U S rate and aims to apply lessons learned to reduce deaths back home. Lou praised West Virginia safety programs and plans further study before returning to Pittsburgh and then Taipho to adapt safety practices for Formosa’s expanding coal industry.

Rabid Dogs Confirmed in Raleigh County
