Stephens Lake grant approved by federal officials

A $1.2 million federal grant for Stephens Lake development was approved, with $400,000 local county funds for roads parking beach areas docks and utilities. Construction should start within 100 days creating 1 282 man months of local labor. Raleigh County leaders credited Senator Byrd for securing the funds and the Beckley Raleigh County Chamber backed his role.

Stephens Lake project eyed as economic boost for Raleigh County

Webb credits Ward and Davis for pushing the Accelerated Public Works grant and local effort to back Stephens Lake. Davis touts a $1.6 million riverfront plan including 7.65 miles of roads 1 000 car parking and a 50 000 square foot beach with travel trailer court 100 sites. He expects tourists from a 500 mile radius to spend 15 to 25 dollars daily, boosting the county economy.

Bill to finance county share killed in Senate

The State Senate killed a local bill that would have allowed Raleigh County Court to sell Little Beaver Park to the State Department of Natural Resources and use the proceeds to develop Stephen's Lake. Berkley Lilly said the House passed the measure. a local figure lobbied against it. Civic boosters saw potential Beaver Lake development.

County plans special meeting on Lake Stephens Tourism Development

Grant will convene a 10 am Saturday court session to pursue matching funds and discuss appointments to the Lake Stephens Tourism Development Authority as authorized by the 1963 Legislature. Funding may come from revenue bonds or a special levy election, part of a Raleigh County New River Gorge recreation complex aimed at economic recovery. Byrd calls the grant a tremendous victory and praises local officials for advancing tourism efforts.

Slick Roads Blamed In Raleigh County Wrecks

State Police cited slick highways for three traffic incidents in Raleigh County within 12 hours ending at 8 am. Chris Webb 54 of Naoma was treated at Beckley Memorial Hospital for head injuries after his 1958 station wagon was struck twice by a 7 Up Bottling Co truck driven by Robert E. Helton at Surveyor at 8 am. The truck slid and struck the stalled wagon forcing it into an embankment. both vehicles suffered about 1000 in damage. No arrests were reported.

State Soldier Dies In Fire At Seoul

Two American soldiers burned to death in a van serving as living quarters near Camp Kaiser. Spec. 4 Paneo Hughes, 22, of Wharton, Texas, and Pfe. Mike Pasillas, 18, of Lone Pine, California, died after a guard spotted smoke and rescuers could not reach them. Both were survived by their fathers.

Centennial Trade Dollar Delayed Indefinitely

The West Virginia Centennial Trade Dollar scheduled for Thursday has been delayed indefinitely by the Centennial Commission until adjustments are made by the U S Treasury. A new date will be announced as details are worked out. Coins will be bronze with the Great Seal on one side and the Centennial Lucky Bear on the other and may be used for trading during the Centennial year at participating businesses.

Beckley College to Expand South Kanawha Street Campus

Beckley College plans an administration building on the South Kanawha Street site to ease crowding and add four classrooms. Construction begins April 1 weather permitting and should finish by fall, expanding capacity toward 700 students. The project aims to attract students and boost local economy while district facilities include a library and community buildings nearby.

Alumina From Shale and Clay Proposed by Coal Industry

He said pilot plant design would need about 200000 dollars and that current research has invested around 5 million dollars. success could cut mining costs and reduce reliance on imported bauxite for alumina.

Ohio River crests with little damage in WV area

The Ohio River rose above flood stage across West Virginia with crests from Wheeling to Ravenswood and beyond. Parkersburg and Huntington reported high levels, but walls and infrastructure limited damage. Snow and rock slides blocked dozens of roads, ringing in spring with winter remnants and numerous highway closures across multiple counties.
