Proposal Would Expand Penalties for Police Brutality
Marshall cites over 1000 complaints of mistreatment and coerced confessions in the period. Kennedy argues current federal law is vague and inadequate when brutality causes serious injury or death. A bill would raise penalties from 1000 dollars and one year to 5000 dollars and life imprisonment. The Civil Rights Commission urged such changes in 1961, noting brutality remains a national problem and disproportionately harms African Americans.

Relief Couple Bares Death Hoax In Benefit Scam
RIVERHEAD N Y UPI Rosemary Bachulis deep claimed her husband Peter Bachulis died of a coronary occlusion in 1953 and filed for Veterans Administration life insurance and other benefits. The death certificate named Dr John J Finneran of Poquott and was filed in Brookhaven Suffolk County. In fact Peter had changed his name to Peter R Sherry two years earlier.
