Bank Teller Charged Fugitive Shumate Arrested Near Hinton

B J Shumate, linked to a Raleigh bank shortage, leaped from a Bank of Raleigh window, fled in a car, and was tracked to Hinton where Magistrate John Gwinn arrested him. He was returned to Raleigh County jail and then to Beckley hospital after detainment.

Danese Meadows Wins At Stoco Junior Contest

Danese Meadows daughter of Mr and Mrs A Meadows of Pickshin won the right to represent the junior division of Stoco High at a literary contest to be held tomorrow. Her declamation The Meaning of An American by Henry Cabot Lodge was judged best of five by Mrs W B Moorefield of Killarney and two Stoco faculty members. Sixteen Shot In Czechoslovakia

In Bonhdan Czechoslovakia a gun battle between police and about 2,000 villagers left sixteen dead including twelve foresters and four gendarmes after a protest over alleged economic and social inequalities. Rioting began at a meeting of the agricultural party, with assaults on officials and lamps smashed. women and children joined in shooting and stone throwing as villagers and security forces faced off behind barricades.

Youthful Oratory will be in vogue at two o'clock tomorrow afternoon in Woodrow Wilson High school auditorium where six Raleigh county junior high schools join the first county junior declamation contest. Each representative will deliver a memorized ora tion on a present day subject. Beckley Hardware and Supply company provides the trophy.
