A flash flood and subsequent mud and debris swept through Mullens and nearby towns. Stores like Thomas Grocery on Guyandotte Avenue suffered major merchandise and fixture losses. Residents fear rat infestations and officials plan health department guidance to improve sanitation.

Circle To Serve Alumni Dinner

Circle No. 1 of the Fayet teville Methodist Church met at Mrs. Gene Bowling's home with Miss Tommie Dove as co host. Treasurer's report shows $246 in general fund and $8.17 in flower fund. Members signed cards for local individuals and planned a Morris Harvey Alumni dinner March 19 at 6 30 p m at Fayette County Memorial Building.

Blake Cook Honored At Surprise Party

Blake Cook celebrated his 69th birthday with a surprise party at his Matheny home hosted by his children. Attendees included Mr. and Mrs. Dick Cook and children Judy and Jimmy, and numerous Cook relatives from Pineville, Welch, and Oceana.

McGraws and relatives seek visits and returns home

After a week with her parents Mr and Mrs Basil Size more and their daughter Glenna the Size more family left for Newport News Virginia. Fulton C Brown returned home from Wyoming General Hospital Mullens where he had been a patient for a month and was accompanied by his son James C. Charles ton spent the weekend with his parents. Mrs Horace McGraw left for Norton to visit her father J W Riley and relatives including Mrs Louie Gutshall and daughter before traveling to Summersville with her husband and son Joe to meet her father.

McGraw School Pajama Party Honors Student

Mr. and Mrs. Aden Tilley hosted a pajama party for their daughter Faye at their home Friday night. Overnight guests included seventh and eighth graders Rachel Clay Linda Stewart Joyce Brown Drema Tolliver and Ruby Bowers from John McGraw Grade School. Games were played and a midnight snack followed by breakfast Saturday morning.

Area Flooding Worst In History In Marsh Fork Region

Floods in Marsh Fork District and Whitesville area are described as historic with 2.89 inch rainfall at Dry Creek. Homes, schools, roads, and bridges flooded. Montcoal, Stickney, and Eunice evacuated. Armco equipment used to clear Route 3. several bridges washed out and highways blocked.

Flooded Ravencliff area aids evacuate ill man

In Ravencliff and surrounding Sabine River communities residents cope with a severe flood. The Payne family sheltering in a hilltop smokehouse were freed Tuesday by 13 men through rugged terrain with Bailey moved to Beckley Hospital.

Mullens couple announce birth of son Clifford A Cook Jr

Mr and Mrs Clifford A Cook of Orlando Florida announce the birth of their first child a son Clifford A Jr at 7 pm Sunday in Memorial Hospital Orlando. The baby weighed four pounds twelve ounces. The mother Loretta Easterling is the daughter of Mr and Mrs C E Easterling of Guyandotte Avenue Mullens and father is son of Mr and Mrs Clifford Cook of Mullens.
