New Trial Ordered For Melvin Loveless
The West Virginia Supreme Court unanimously vacated the murder conviction of Melvin Loveless in Charleston and ordered a new trial. Loveless, a 31 year old Charleston hotel and nightclub owner, was sentenced to die for being an accessory before the fact in the first degree murder of Mrs. Sarah Reed during a $600 Logan County apartment robbery. The court faulted the trial court for not clarifying that a guilty verdict in murder would mandate the death penalty, and also noted alleged bias in the courtroom. Four other defendants received life sentences in the Reed killing.
