Change In U S Policy Toward China Advised
A Columbia University China expert urged the United States to rethink its China policy. Dr. A Doak Barnett said containment and isolation have failed to provide a sound long term approach and recommended recognizing the mainland regime and extending diplomatic ties when Beijing signals readiness. He testified before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee amid a large audience. The witness urged continued opposition to Red China's expansion and helping neighboring non Communist governments like South Vietnam and Formosa. He argued for basic shifts in posture after 17 years of containment aimed at isolation. The China tangle has deeply affected U S public opinion and policy since the late 1940s.
