Summer Training Schedules Advance 130000-Man Civilian Army
The SRF civilian army of 150000 will be ready for call to active duty by early July. The National Guard Bureau said 119000 come from the Guard with the rest from the Army Reserve. Training completion meets legal readiness for overseas deployment. Maj. Gen. Wilson said guard units average 95.4 percent war strength, nearing 100 percent in summer drills. Defense Secretary McNamara signaled a reserve callup if Viet Nam troop levels rise above 350000. The SRF received full manning and equipment with extra drills at additional cost under $100 million. The SRF aims for unit readiness to avoid fillers from Berlin crisis era. About half SRF strength is in three divisions and six brigades with remaining units in 49 states. The 28th, 38th, and 47th divisions lead.
