Lutherans Acquire Maxwell Hill Site for New Church
The Beckley St Luke Lutheran Church bought Maxwell Hill acreage for a future church and education center. The 200 by 567 foot grounds border a 40 foot street on three sides, with parts bought from New River Coal Co and Maxwell Farm Woman's Club. Architect plans are underway for an initial building to be reviewed March 18. The 63-member congregation earlier completed the site purchase after two and a half years of searching, with services previously held in Beckley newspaper offices. A parsonage at 317 Crescent Rd was bought in June 1960.

Beckley planner cites lack of civic interest in city growth
Fred W. LaBastille Beckley resident planner told the Civitan Club that Beckley grew without planned expansion and residents focus more on individual problems than overall development. He aims to complete a comprehensive plan by October with recommendations for downtown one way traffic, more parking, and concrete expansion plans. He invites public input while noting the city is financially sound but not necessarily in good physical shape.
