Holiday safety talk warns of rising traffic deaths
Beckley State Police Sgt. W. E. Webb told the Men of the Church Club at Beckley Presbyterian Church that the May 1 through Sept. 30 period and the holiday season bring a higher death rate on roads. He projected about 400 West Virginians may be killed this year, up from 368 last year, citing 80 percent of county accidents outside towns and 60 percent on straightaways. In Raleigh County 37 percent of crashes occur 5 to 8 p.m. and 49 percent on Saturdays and Sundays. He urged engineering, education, and enforcement to reduce accidents and noted more drivers on the roads raise economic losses.
