The verdict by a three judge circuit court panel without a jury also finds him guilty of assault on two other Black individuals. Sentencing postponed pending motions for a new trial with a maximum penalty of 10 years and a 500 dollar fine on manslaughter.
CAPE CANAVERAL AP I reports a sleek Minuteman ICBM streaked over 4000 miles to an Atlantic Ocean target Thursday night. The Air Force called the firing a complete success. More than 100 nuclear tipped Minuteman rockets are in firing position with a plan for 900 ultimately on station.
Thousands of miners across District 29 in Raleigh Fayette Wyoming McDowell Greenbrier and Mercer counties start a two week vacation tomorrow ending Saturday July 13. About 13 000 workers will receive vacation pay totaling roughly 2 500 000 while 10 000 or more get 200 in full pay. District 29 offices in Beckley will close during the break.
Edwards Air Force Base California AP Bob Rushworth an X15 pilot is identified as America's newest astronaut after his near 55 mile space flight. He predicts a 67 mile altitude record next month with Joe Walker as the scheduled pilot.
Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev arrived in East Berlin at Schoenefeld Airport to attend celebrations for Walter Ulbricht’s 70th birthday and to gauge future talks with East German leadership. Ulbricht framed Kennedy’s West Berlin visit as against German interests, while Khrushchev praised socialism and signaled possible high level discussions.

Maryland Road Commission chairman John R. Funk urged top consideration of an inter state Allegany Skyway linking Pennsylvania Maryland and West Virginia. At a meeting with Franklin D Roosevelt Jr Gov. Tawes and others they discussed aiding the depressed Appalachian area. Funk said isolation hurts Appalachia and the skyway could be a north south express route with scenic and economic benefits.
United Nations diplomats say the General Assembly approved a seven part plan to erase a $100 million deficit and improve peace keeping funding yet Russia and its Communist allies refused to pay for Congo and Middle East missions. Thant scheduled a news conference at 11 a.m. EDT to discuss the emergency financial plan endorsed by 111 nations during a 45 day special session.
The Senate Armed Services Committee approved Adm. David L. McDonald as the new chief of naval operations and reappointed Gen. Curtis E. LeMay as Air Force chief of staff. LeMay’s reappointment was later confirmed after assurances from Defense Secretary McNamara that leaders would not be gagged. McDonald will succeed Adm. George W. Anderson, who becomes ambassador to Portugal amid reports Anderson may have conflicted with Pentagon policy.
Raymond Harper 35 of Elkview was killed Thursday in South Charleston when a crane on a truck he drove struck a high tension power line. Authorities said 7200 volts passed through his body as he unloaded blocks for Kanawha Block Co in the Thousand Oaks Development area.
Nicholas Ukraine, 26, an unemployed electrical helper, killed Robert O. Reidy, 45, his wife Mary, 43, and their 10-year-old son Mark in their living room. He later admitted the slayings, claiming the family had been making fun of him.
