Supreme Court Desegregation Mandate in Prince Edward Case
The May 31 decree remanding segregation cases to district courts was followed by today's mandate awarding $2,975.19 in costs to the Negro plaintiffs in the Prince Edward suit and directing recovery from defendants. The likely source is the county Board of Supervisors, as the Prince Edward school board and Superintendent McIlwain were sued in official capacities. The mandate shifts momentum to the plaintiffs’ attorneys to propose a decree for the trial court to implement desegregation as directed by the appellate court.
