Fayette county ranked sixth by population in West Virginia and listed 223 war dead and missing in World War II. The adjutant general’s report shows 1.58 percent of the army total dead and missing from the state, with Kanawha County and McDowell County higher in totals. The list names soldiers killed in action and other categories, led by Lt. Damon E. Adkins and many others.

Most registrants were veterans or spouses turning 21, with many former servicemen not yet registered. Unregistered voters may still sign up at Fayette county clerk's office until July 6.

A World War II casualty report from the West Virginia adjutant general lists 74 Wyoming County residents among the state’s war dead.
