In Buffalo New York the bound and gagged body of 3 1/2 year old Andrew Andy Ashley was recovered from a lake after he vanished with a child kidnapping spree blamed on a "woman maniac." Residents recall the boy as friendly and seek answers as police label the crime highly difficult.
Police described a drowning death in Buffalo tied to a killer dubbed the Pied Piper in skirts. Investigators say the suspect bound two child victims with stockings, left only in underpants and a T shirt, with a towel around the neck, yet not fatally. Victims, a 5 year old boy and a 5 year old girl, escaped and aided descriptions for a composite of the suspect.
In Delaware Park witnesses described a woman dragging a barefoot boy toward the water while a man in a raincoat and a crowd presence could have altered the outcome. Police, led by Inspector Schneider, consider a mid thirties suspect, while Andy’s father and Mayor Sedita plead for child safety and rapid arrests.

Westfield Massachusetts UPI reports Airman 2C Sherman Neel of Bluefield West Virginia drowned while swimming with friends early Sunday at Hampton Pond. He belonged to the 76th Fighter Interceptor Squadron at Westover Air Force Base Chicopee. Skindivers recovered his body from 25 feet of water.
