Gen Clark voiced optimism over armistice talks after meeting with President Rhee, saying the truce document is nearly ready and that U.N. command governs unless the Reds block consensus. The report notes Rhee’s stance against a divided Korea and outlines storm damages across Crab Orchard Lester Sophia and Beckley areas with floods, power faults, and evacuated basements.
In the House of Commons Prime Minister Churchill denounced Syngman Rhee's release of anti communist prisoners and warned Britain had not pledged to conquer Korea. He noted the US bears a heavy burden guarding prisoners as Britain sent a formal protest to Rhee condemning unilateral acts against UN authority.
Summersville pilot O. J. Morris of Dunbar escaped unharmed after a crash landing during a wind storm then a post landing attempt. His two seat Swift plane struck a utility pole on Route 19 near Huck Stables private airport, blocking traffic until removed.
Police search continues for Stella Nolan an 8 year old girl reportedly kidnapped from a crowded Norwalk area shopping center near Los Angeles. No solid clues yet and officers pursue every lead as her mother Mrs. Owen Nolan 40 cooperates with the inquiry.
Weather outlook for West Virginia with tonight’s fair skies and a low around 60s. Tuesday partly cloudy with highs near 83 to 88. Regional temperatures listed for Beckley Oak Hill Glade Creek and nearby rivers indicate mixed readings, with highs around 90 yesterday in some locations and lows in the upper 50s to 60s. River and reservoir conditions show normal stages with milky water noted at Bluestone Reservoir.
In Amboy Illinois Stanley W Gibson 33 and Miss Joyce Underhile 19 a former pupil in his English class were married in the First Congregational Church. About 150 relatives and friends attended. Gibson faced firing in 1951 for dating his pupil but resigned after community support. He is now office manager of an Amboy rug factory. his bride, a University of Illinois sophomore, will not return to school next fall.
A 20 year old Marshall College student from Putnam County died when his car collided with a tractor trailer on State Rt 17 between Winfield and Pliny. State Trooper Lawrence Craft identified the victim as Charlie Ray Livezey of Pliny.
Funeral services for Julius and Ethel Rosenberg drew tearful praise for the executed spies and fierce attacks on U S officials. Defense Atty Emanuel Bloch denounced their executions as murder and blamed Eisenhower Brownell and Hoover. The Brooklyn service drew about 500 mourners and 10 000 in heat, with chanting and a long funeral procession to Wellwood Cemetery on Long Island.
Former president Harry S. Truman sleeps in after a long 1200 mile automobile journey from Independence Missouri. He declines political discussion citing untimely timing while at the Mayflower Hotel. He plans memoirs and lectures with offers for magazine work, and will dine with former White House staff and cabinet members during his stay.
Fire at 211 Fourth Street caused slight damage estimated at 50 dollars. At 9:15 a.m. today a bathroom gas heater wiring sparked a fire in the floor and wall of Carl Bostick’s home. Fire Chief Bernard Martin reported the cause as a loose connection in the heater.
Dewey H. Boyde, about 50, of Keenan in Monroe County, was crushed to death here early today when a bulldozer being unloaded from a truck bed slipped and pinned him. He is survived by his widow and two children.
John Christie, a 55 year old Londoner accused of garroting his wife Ethel last December, pleads innocent as insanity defense. Prosecutors allege he killed four women, with bodies found under floorboards and in a cubbyhole in a shabby West London home.
Across the nation a four day heat wave pushed the death toll to at least 125 as official summer started. Temperatures peaked in the 100s in multiple cities and warnings of water shortages and storms followed. Lightning killed several in New York and Ohio, with 14 heat deaths and 103 drownings reported nationwide.

A final inspection and acceptance of a new six room school for Negro students was completed by Raleigh County officials. The brick and cinder block building cost 90000 dollars and sits on a bluff west of Stratton High School near Raleigh. Architects and contractors led the tour while board members and county officials reviewed the facility and plan to transport students by bus. The Raleigh Negro school will replace Morton Reaves and East Beckley elementary schools, enrolling students through the eighth grade.
HUNTINGTON Wilbur Doc Davis, 40, was to be arraigned before Magistrate Howard Newman today on a murder charge in the shooting of his estranged wife Beulah Irene Davis. They were separated but lived in the same building. previously resided in Milton. MORGANTOWN Hosmer H. Cropp of Clarksburg named to a two year WVU athletic council alumnus seat. Clyde L. Colson reappointed faculty member and council chairman. Cropp is a former WVU football tackle and student body president 1936-37. Smithfield A Reed, W Va boy Jerry Blake killed in a car-truck collision on Highway 70. mother and brother injured. Jerry is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas P. Blake. Mrs. Blake seriously hurt. Jerry’s brother Tommy listed as satisfactory. WAYNE William B. Smith, 60, WV House of Delegates member in 1929-1930 and Wayne County commissioner for 18 years, died at home.
Two cases involving unlawful possession and sale of alcoholic liquor were remanded to magistrate's court from Criminal Court. Herbert Judkins, address not given, was defendant in both actions. Another indictment charging Judkins with possession of firearms during unlawful manufacture, transportation, and sale of alcoholic liquors was nalled by the State. The trial of Huey Canterbury on a rape charge was continued.
Raleigh area parks set attendance records as crowds escaped heat. At Camp Beckwith and Little Beaver Park over 5,000 people visited. Camp Beckwith drew 1,918 swimmers. No accidents reported. a four-year-old girl was briefly lost at Little Beaver but reunited with her mother after about 45 minutes.
George Botman of Sophia pleaded guilty before Magistrate J. P. Meadows to charges of illegal possession and sale of tax paid liquors. He paid a $50 fine and costs on each charge. Botman was arrested Friday night when county officers raided his home opposite the state liquor store at Sophia.
Beckley reports an Esso price rise as Roy E. McDaniel states. Gasoline up nine tenths of a cent per gallon, kerosene up seven tenths, diesel and other distillates by six tenths. Similar increases expected from other firms due to crude oil cost hikes and wage rises.

A former Beckley resident John Beckley Campbell and his wife, of Milton, were treated for food poisoning after a Sunday picnic at Babcock State Park. The couple had lived in Beckley until May 13 when he became assistant manager at General Department Store 51 in Milton. Six other Milton residents, including the store manager, were treated at the Men Hospital for minor poisoning. The Campbells drove to Beckley to visit Mrs. W. A. White after the picnic before being admitted.
