World Court orders South Africa to quit South West Africa
The International Court of Justice in The Hague ruled by 15 judges that South Africa must withdraw from South West Africa and end its occupation. It urged United Nations members to refrain from direct dealings with the territory, while noting the opinion has no binding effect on Pretoria. The decision follows a UN request for an advisory opinion on Namibia’s status amid disputes over resources and security.
