Virtually Unknown Jack Fleck Wins Open in Stirring Playoff
Davenport Iowa reports Jack Fleck, once obscure, clinched the U S Open at San Francisco's Olympic Club after a dramatic playoff with idol Ben Hogan. Fleck's rise followed a year of winter tour success and steady improvement since Navy service in World War II. He began golf as a teen, learned under pros, and credits Hogan as a model. His wife Lynn recalls early financial struggles yet confidence grew as he refined his temper and focus. Local figures including Joe Brown of Des Moines GC predicted the Open win, noting Fleck still believes he has more to learn about golf.
