Potato Prices Drop as Supplies Reach Markets
Lower prices for potatoes and several fresh fruits dominated the food news this week while meat and butter prices stayed mostly steady. Potatoes fell sharply amid heavy shipments to terminal markets, with five pound bag cuts around 10 cents and plentiful supplies reported everywhere. Summer fruits like cantaloupe watermelons cherries and berries declined in price as demand rose, while vegetables such as cucumbers lettuce and tomatoes showed mixed movement. The Agriculture Department noted lettuce milk and dairy products as the most plentiful for thrifty buying.
