President Eisenhower called the Senate move to reject Lewis L. Strauss as secretary of commerce a sad episode. He said the American people are the losers and briefly spoke to reporters in the White House after the vote. The Senate blocked Strauss's Cabinet appointment on Thursday night.
Washington AP reports the Senate rejected confirming Lewis L. Strauss as Secretary of Commerce. Democrats against the nomination included Byrd and Randolph of West Virginia.
President Eisenhower publicly praised Strauss as loyal and upright while noting that denying officials with proven integrity harms the nation. Strauss’s rejection by the Senate marked a historic first since 1925, with 31 Republicans and 15 Democrats for confirmation and 49 against.
Preliminary surveys by the Corps of Engineers in Tommy Creek Hollow near Rhodell are part of Congress authorized flood control studies on the Guyandotte River system. An Army engineer cautioned that boundaries are not yet determined and the site may or may not appear in the Corps recommendations to Congress due in September.
Charleston AP reports Gov. Underwood said the idea of running for vice president has been mentioned but he has made no plans. He emphasized no decisive decision has been made on the matter.
Sherwood Glutz claims land near Egera could be sold to Uncle Sam for the Beckley post office location. He warns locals to end feuding or buyers may stay away, fearful without their shooting irons.
Princeton citizens condemn the Norfolk and Western and Virginian Railway merger as a plan to enslave Southern West Virginia. Their four page ad argues Pennsylvania interests control coal regions, warn of job losses and loss of a key local industry, ICC hearings continue with Princeton set for June.
Charleston resident James Carter was held on a non support charge and given a hearing before Magistrate Cotton White. He was fined $11 and costs and ordered to pay $100 monthly for his wife and family’s support, with bond set not to exceed 120 days and custody to Raleigh County Jail in lieu of bond.
A tense scene in Louisiana shows Gov Earl Long shouting curses as police attempt to force him to a mental hospital for a second time in three weeks. He fled from the Ochsner Foundation Hospital after being flown from a Galveston psychiatric clinic and aimed to resume duties. Mrs Long obtained an order committing him to the state hospital in Mandeville and officers picked him up at the parish line and drove him there.
Washington AP reports May living costs rose one tenth of a percent to 124 percent of the 1947-49 base, the highest level on record. Spendable earnings for a four person family reached 81.03 weekly, up 3.6 cents from April, with pay and hours cited as causes. The Labor Department notes costs stayed in a narrow band but may rise again in summer if food prices climb.
The Register expands state news coverage as Wheeling and Parkersburg papers join AP membership. Wheeling News Register starts AP wire June 29 and Parkersburg News and Parkersburg Sentinel on November 15. Wheeling Intelligencer will also join state AP, under Ogden chain leadership.
Rex Edwin Johnson 28 of Wilkesboro NC faces a manslaughter charge after a head on crash on the West Virginia Turnpike that killed three men. The victims include James Tennyson Lilly of Canton OH Harold Lee Stanford Beckley WV and Roy R Caldwell Detroit MI. Johnson posted 1500 bond and was discharged from Beckley hospital for a Fayette County hearing. The crash occurred at 2 15 am two miles north of Mossy interchange.
Four youths from Marsh Fork were fined 25 dollars each by Magistrate L G Daniels after a drunken rampage along Route 3 in Raleigh County. The group admitted smashing windows at five businesses, stole shoes and other small items from Barrett's Grocery, and faced a 60 day jail term which would be lifted upon completing repair payments. Officers Deputy Edgar Jarrell and State Trooper Richard Johnson led the investigation.
Raleigh County Criminal Court settled into a quiet session as jurors were excused until Monday. Cases from last Wednesday and Thursday were interrupted by the murder trial of Goldie Mae Lambert. A second murder trial is set for Wednesday as William I. Hines faces charges for the March 22 shooting of Bruce Winston Jr. at 905 Scott Avenue. Winston died March 23 after being wounded in Beckley.
J. L. Hatch er, 73, Lester, in Raleigh General Hospital since Tuesday needs three pints of Type A Negative. Daughter Mrs. Estle Meadows of Rhodell requests donors and asks them to report to the hospital as none of the family has the blood type.
In Geneva Soviet Foreign Minister Andrei Gromyko rejected the West’s latest Berlin interim plan as a basis for discussion. Western officials said the Soviet position offered “no new hope” while Khrushchev pressed to end the Allied occupation of West Berlin and pursue summit talks.
Eugene Rhodes, dubbed the man from nowhere, was committed to the West Virginia State Mental Hospital Huntington after a 1 pm Thursday hearing. He is in Raleigh County Jail awaiting transfer, with officials unable to verify his identity or origins despite leads from John Lynn of Rainelle who identified him as Eugene Rhodes.
Beckley City Police investigated a Wednesday night break in at Abe's Store on South Fayette street. About 25 dollars in coins were reported stolen as officers canvassed the area for clues.
Warren W Gooden of Mullens was arrested by City Police at 8 30 p m Thursday on charges of running a red light and improper registration He posted 5 bond on the first charge and was ordered to appear in Police Court on the improper registration charge June 22
Benny Austin Sweeney and Glen Morgan were booked in Raleigh County Jail at 8 55 p m Thursday on a driving while intoxicated charge. Sweeney faced Magistrate T H Wills Beaver for a hearing this morning, pleaded guilty, was fined 50 dollars plus costs, sent to jail for 24 hours, and had his driver’s license revoked automatically under state law.
Raymond Perkins a veteran Matewan policeman died in Williamson hospital after being shot by the wife of a man he was arresting on a moonshine charge. Prosecutor Slater said a murder charge is being prepared against Dollie Miller Moore. Perkins fired back wounding Mrs Moore as six shots were fired. Moore’s husband Wayne is jailed on possession of moonshine.
Jasper Farmer of Midway was arrested by Mab Scott Police Chief Boyd Hutchinson and fined 10 dollars plus costs with a 10 day jail sentence. He was placed in Raleigh County Jail at 6 20 Thursday evening to begin serving his term.
McCaleb charged with stabbing Thelma Latcille McNeill 69 times near Hinton waived grand jury action and is jailed in Summers County. No bond set. He appeared before Magistrate Jack Holt as witnesses testified similarly to the earlier report. McCaleb’s mother said he had been in Veterans Administration Hospital Roanoke but released 12 years ago. He claimed he could not remember anything. They had lived together while he repaired cars for C and O Railway in Russell. A Huntington hearse will collect McNeill’s body from E. M. Meadows Funeral Home.
Warden Lane and Edward C. Kinney of the West Virginia Conservation Commission visited Beckley and Raleigh County to advise on a proposed large fishing and recreational lake. They toured Flat Top Lake with project originator George Chambers and later inspected the Stevens Branch area, pledging water and soil testing and cooperation to advance the plan.
