Strawberry Producers Urged to Maintain Yearlong Plant Care
Melvin Kolbe extension horticulturist who judged the Raleigh County 4-H Strawberry Festival urged continued care for next year’s crop. Remove runners around nine inches long, with one pass to clear them. The Fairland variety led regional production, with 1,000 plants yielding 51 quarts and costs detailed for participants like Farland Lilly, who reported $114.32 profit on a $61.14 investment from 1,000 plants. He notes short hog supplies and high pork prices bolster beef, but expects higher fed-cattle supplies in late 1954 and 1955, risking a fall price rise.
