Seoul reports a major Chinese assault drives 6,000 troops to seize Finger Ridge, then pushes south toward Kyoam Mountain as Pukhan River positions shift. Simultaneous raid hits Kimpo airfield and Inchon, with Soviet-made PO2 planes blamed for the five recent Seoul-area air attacks.

Charleston reports a staff reshuffle at the Liquor Control Commission with the resignation of office manager Edna J. Vorpe effective July 1. Frances Heater will succeed her. Heater has served since 1950 as secretary to Clyde Poling. The economy plan also abolishes senior statistical clerk Freda L. Williamson’s post. Vorpe, from St. Albans, has been with the commission since its founding 18 years ago and is sister to State Senate Finance Chairman Lenn Jackson.
Dayton man Ray Atkinson faced a grand larceny trial as a spectator when he smoked a cigar in court. Judge Harry L. McCreery held him in contempt and jailed him until he paid a $10 fine after Atkinson asked for an ash tray and claimed to have seen no no signs.
Twenty Raleigh Mountains are expected to be in Huntington Friday and Saturday for the state convention of Young Democrats. Sen Harry M. Jackson will deliver the keynote address and Governor William C. Marland will speak at a dinner meeting. Also scheduled to speak are West Virginia's two Democratic senators Harley M. Kilgore and M. SEOUL Lt Col Ruby G Bradley of Spencer West Virginia chief nurse of the Eighth Army will receive the Legion of Merit Thursday at an honor guard ceremony at Eighth Army headquarters. A prisoner of war of the Japanese for more than three years in World War II she will be presented the award by Lt Gen Maxwell D Taylor. She is the only woman officer at Eighth Army headquarters and will be the first to receive an honor guard salute. Miss Bradley was voted Woman of the Year by the Women's National Press Club in Washington last month.
The State Water Commission will send notices to 75 towns including 22 in the Kanawha Little Kanawha and Guyandot basins seeking reports on anti pollution steps. Executive secretary engineer Robert F Rocheleau said progress is assessed after reports are received.
The New Mexico State Penitentiary riot ended after state police stormed the hospital, killing two ringleaders. Deputy Warden Ralph Tahash, who had been held hostage with 21 guards, took control of weapons and helped repel the attackers.

Five prisoners battered through the rear wall of the old Mingo County jail in Williamson, with a sixth man failing to escape after ripping his tee shirt. Jailer Andy Marcum named escapees Jack Adams Ansel Wright Harry Bell Dewey Smith and William Acord as among those who fled toward Nagautuck and Huntington. The jail has a history of breakouts described as a patchwork of old and new bricks.
Mr and Mrs William Roby traveling from Los Angeles to Morgantown for a funeral learn their relatives were misinformed. They discover Mrs Virginia Lovell Clevenger is alive and well. S J Lovell of Morgantown had been told by Massachusetts police of her death, but the report was a mistaken identity. Clevenger calls her father and arrives in Morgantown Sunday night.
Governor Marland may appoint a woman to the Board of Control and a Negro to the three-member State Board of Probation and Parole. No final selections have been made. Miss Virginia Mae Brown is not the nominee for the Board of Control and may become the state’s first woman assistant attorney general. The Board of Control vacancy occurs July 1 with Dell White’s exit. The probation board overhaul, effective July 1, follows the 1953 Legislature, with Dana Eakle likely to be one of the appointees. The parole department restructuring stems from the 1951 Moundsville riot and requires written reasons for parole rejection.
County Prosecutor A J Sparacino labeled Turner W Paris a leg man for a theft ring that steals copper wire and dumps it. Paris on trial for copper wire theft from Raleigh Wyoming Mining Co Edwight reportedly amassed wealth with trucks and a wench and denied brutal treatment by police. The jury began deliberations after testimony from sheriff officials and defense challenges.
One of West Virginia’s largest purebred Hereford dispersals closed after 225 cattle sold for about $213,000. Buyers from 18 states attended a 13 hour sale of the F. F. McIntosh and Son Farm herd. Weston stockman T. F. Koblegard bought the top two bulls. estate settlement ends the McIntosh cattle venture.
James Cox of Beckley was lodged in Raleigh County Jail at 10 30 a m on a charge of driving while drunk. He was arrested by State Police at Shady Spring.
Austin Newbert posted a $56 cash bond with the City Police today on a charge of driving while drunk. Harry Smith of Stamford was arrested by State Police and charged with driving while intoxicated.
Administration backed bill to extend the Reciprocal Trade Act advances to the Senate after a 363 to 35 House vote. Chairman Millikin says brief hearings are planned and one year extension is seen as likely. The Tariff Commission expansion from six to seven members faces a Senate fight after a 215 to 185 House defeat for Democrats.
Mayor Elgie Ballard reports informal notices in Sophia to residents without sewer connections. About 140 homes outside the corporate limits still must join the system, Elgin Hall surveys and gives 30 days before legal action. State law requires connections within 300 feet. fee is 50 dollars.
Rep Robert C. Byrd of West Virginia voted against HR 5495 extending the Reciprocal Trade Act. He said the bill fails to protect coal and other domestic industries, preferring the reciprocal trade principle but protesting the bill’s insufficient safeguards for coal and related sectors.
