County Assessor Faces 50 Cent Signing Fee Dispute
Raleigh County Assessor Steve Carpenter charges 50 cents for signing motor vehicle tax exemption affidavits for 1965. Readers protest, saying taxpayers fund his job and he should not collect. Carpenter claims he need not sign, noting forms are available elsewhere, and that staff handle the load. Officials and lawyers offer cautious opinions, with potential legality needing study.

Change Of Site For Incinerator Approved In City Plan
A city committee approved relocating and extending the proposed incinerator to the area directly across from the Raleigh County Animal Shelter near the landfill. The change cuts costs to about 620000 from an earlier estimate of 815900 and saves 30000 by smaller office size and closer to a paved road. A $43100 federal pre planning grant funds the work as the city seeks a third planning extension.
