Ambassador Adlai Stevenson rejected Republican claims that he pressured the Kennedy administration to reverse plans for air cover over the Cuban invasion. Stevenson spoke before leaving for La Paz on a 10 nation South America tour.

In Tokyo a UPI report says Beverly Quackenbush 36 admitted holding her drunk husband Henry W. Quackenbush 43 while their teenage children beat him with an iron pipe and choked him. He died from loss of blood. authorities plan to question the family in court.
Wilford Burge 51, formerly of Moundsville West Virginia, confessed to the hatchet slaying of Ernest A. Eggert in Canton last March. He allegedly killed Eggert when forced to work and buried the body in the victim’s dirt floor garage after living in Eggert’s house. Burge previously served over four years for attempted murder.
Washington reports Congress moved quickly to raise the national debt ceiling by 85 billion to cover forthcoming months of heavy spending. The administration seeks $5 billion more, prompting conservative attacks as House Ways & Means Committee reviews the bill behind closed doors with a likely House passage next week. Howard W. Smith said spending will require further increases beyond the $5 billion.
An 18-year-old Beckley resident, Joseph David Hindsley, has been appointed to the United States Military Academy at West Point. After passing all exams, he will report July 5 as a cadet. He graduated fifth in his Woodrow Wilson High School class and credits Col. Elliot B. Hopkins and Congressman John Slack for the opportunity after months of pursuit.
Kitty, touted as the oldest cat in the United States, died at age 30 in Lufkin, Texas. Owners Ike and Kitty Cox buried her near home after a decline ending with limited appetite. The Guinness record then cited a 35 year old English cat in 1957 as the oldest.
Communist led students in Caracas burned U S Ambassador Teodoro Moscoso s car and held him for about three hours outside a university fortress. Moscoso remained calm and said the incident was not important while a mob of about 400 threatened his chauffeur and beat a photographer. He is the first Puerto Rican to head a U S embassy, and agitation followed his arrival over alleged colonial ties.
West Virginia s Democrat led legislature seeks to extend the 3 cent sales tax to June 30 1962 to fund an Emergency Employment Program and aid to dependent children. Gov Barron cites $26 million impact with federal match and notes 6 858 jobs created so far. Senate moves on 24 executive appointments as session winds down.
Charleston WV UPI Minority Leader George H Seibert Jr introduced two companion bills in the House to exempt food purchases from the consumers sales tax while maintaining a 3 percent rate. The measure aims to raise about 1 to 1.5 million more revenue than the former 2 percent rate and would alter breaking points and tax on groceries.
Ivan Tors of Ziv United Artists told a Senate subcommittee that NBC officials sought more sex in seven sold TV shows while CBS hinted that injecting youth and crime could boost ratings for The Aquanauts. He split from Malibu Run after CBS changed its stance and he secured a contract clause allowing exit if productions adversely influenced youth.
A fire at Omar Mining Co No 5 mine near Omar has spread, prompting officials to seal the mine to extinguish it. The blaze follows an explosion ten days earlier that killed two workers, with the closure likely lasting several weeks and leaving 230 miners jobless.
